Formaldehyde, also know as methyl aldehyde, is a pungent, colourless gas that is easy soluble in water and ethanol. It can cause respiratory and skin irritation upon exposure. As a precursor to many other materials and chemical compounds, formaldehyde is commonly used to produce urea formaldehyde resin, paraformaldehyde, hexamine, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate(MDI) and so on, which are widely used to make plywood, carpet, paint, explosives, insulation, etc.

The processes to produce FM are methanol oxidation method, natural gas oxidation method, dimethyl ether oxidation method and methanol dehydrogenation method, among which the methanol oxidation method are prevailing, accounting for 90% of the global capacity.
